Project Brief

During the COVID-19 pandemic, more than half of the world's population was required to stay at home as a result of strict social distancing measures. Health systems adopted virtual diagnosis and screening tools widely. A patient can be treated virtually and seamlessly using conversational AI and machine learning capabilities (ML), a patient can be treated virtually and seamlessly. Furthermore, depending on the patient's information, a virtual AI assistant with AR experience may give quick risk assessment, self-treatment, and scoring.

Problem

Third of people each year admit to seeing a hospital for a minor condition and mental issues that they could have treated at home. I discovered that it’s not a lack of desire to self-care. I found it was anxiety, lack of confidence, stigma, discrimination and forgetfulness that ‘got in the way’ of self-care; people were giving up too early, and too easily. How can design be used to rethink self-treatment support, and reduce hospital visits for minor health issues? This was the focus for our project.

My Impact

For this project, I leveraged user research insights to design an innovative, AI-powered symptom assessment and personalised treatment solution that seamlessly integrates into users' self-care routines. My user-centric approach aimed to minimise anxiety around self-treating by providing reliable health information, digital tracking, and community support - equipping and empowering users with the knowledge and confidence to proactively manage their well-being without overly relying on professional medical care for minor conditions.

System Literature Review

Despite having a desire to self-care, half of the population sees a general practitioner for a self-treatable condition every year. Minor conditions can be treated, but people aren't sure how long it is going to take.
A few insights:

  • Anxiety and belief that the severity and duration are unusual.

  • Being prescribed medicine for minor ailments in the past seemed like a confirmation that medical intervention was required for any future affliction.

  • Having insufficient knowledge and skills about self-care.

  • Lack of attention to self-care.

Also, According to world Health report, two-thirds of those who suffer from mental illnesses don't seek help because of stigma, discrimination, and neglect frequently prevent people with mental problems from receiving treatment and care.

    Key facts

  • 1 in every 8 people in the world live with a mental disorder.

  • Mental disorders involve significant disturbances in thinking, emotional regulation, or behavior.

  • There are many different types of mental disorders.

Market Research

  • To gain behavioural insights, I looked through a variety of online resources.

  • Patients go online mostly to understand how to treat the condition, but also for help diagnosing.

  • Reliable sources, such as government sources, are a strong preference.

  • People don’t self-care consistently because they forget or it’s not convenient.

  • Most people experience minor illnesses at least once a year, though some experience them more often than others. Approximately three out of four people visit their doctor for minor ailments that they could have treated themselves because their health concerns are too severe to treat or because they believe the condition has remained untreated for too long.

  • Self-care for common conditions can also help free up some of your GP’s time, making it easier to get an appointment when you have a more serious condition.

  • Patients occasionally find it simpler to communicate with a chatbot than they do a doctor face-to-face because they feel more at ease doing so. in particular when it comes to mental disorders.

Empathy Mapping

To summarize what I learned while carrying out a research, I created an empathy map. You may get into the user's head and understand why they act the way they do by focusing on the four main sections of the map. It also made the process of creating personas a little bit simpler for me.

User and Business Requirement

To understand the user and business requirements I conducted a mental reconnaissance using the five WHY’s technique to gather pain points, goals, and potential conflicts and their solutions. By identifying the super objectives, I gained a better understanding of users and business needs. I also uncovered potential conflicts that may arise in meeting those needs. I created a short user scenario to picture the user experience with the product, which allowed me to identify potential areas for improvement. organising my findings and ensuring that i covered all the necessary information. The mental reconnaissance process was crucial in helping me understand the user's business requirements and identifying potential solutions to meet those requirements.

Scenario
Susan, a 30-year-old software developer for a fintech company, wants to monitor and maintain her health and wellbeing so she won't have to go to the doctor for minor issues. Because she has minor health issues, such as a sore throat or cramps in her stomach, she wants a health application that will assist her in identifying symptoms and provide a full report of likely causes, prevention, and  tailored recommendations for treatment that can be done at home. she opens the symptom assessment option in the application and completes the assessment by answering all the relevant questions based on the entered symptoms. if she wants to explore alternative therapies, the app provides a detailed report of possible causes, risks, prevention and treatment recommendations, and also notifies her regarding appointments and a reminder to take medications. She can also maintain a digital health record of her assessment, treatment, allergies, medications and more. She can also join communities who have experienced similar medical issues and can offer support and guidance Overall, Susan will be able to maintain and gain control over her physical and mental health, which lessens her anxiety and stress. The app allows Susan to manage her minor medical issues while still keeping up with her busy work schedule.

The output presents the Susan scenario, where a 30-year-old software developer named Susan uses a health management app to achieve her health objectives. She aims to gain awareness of self-treatment options, minimize medication usage, reduce hospital visits for treatable conditions, and keep digital health records. Susan desires empowerment, a better work-life balance, and seeks features like a symptom checker, reliable health information, reminders, community support, and wearable integration. However, as the scenario is fictional, it lacks real user feedback, and further research is needed for data privacy and compliance to ensure a successful and ethical product.

Super Objective

Defining the super objectives helped uncover the deeper, underlying motivations and aspirations driving both the users and the business. By going beyond the stated goals and repeatedly asking "Why?" i was able to identify the core values and desired outcomes that would ultimately shape the product's purpose and design direction.

Potential Conflict and Possible Solution

Identifying and addressing potential conflicts between Susan's objectives and the business is essential for creating an effective and user-centered app. By understanding Susan's needs and goals, the app can be designed to provide personalised solutions and address her pain points. Resolving conflicts also helps protect user privacy and provide accurate information. By considering these potential conflicts and developing suitable solutions, the app can enhance the user experience and contribute to the success of the business in the healthcare market. Creating a well-designed application that minimises conflicts between Susan and business objectives is crucial. This includes providing clear disclaimers and warnings about the limitations of alternative therapies, ensuring easy access to reliable health information, and implementing robust data protection measures. By incorporating these principles into the design, the app can provide a positive user experience, effectively resolve conflicts, and ensure compliance with legal and other constraints.

Customer Journey

Customer journey mapping involves going through each stage and identifying the customer's feelings, needs, necessary actions to satisfy those needs, and decision-making processes at each of those steps. I was able to better understand the kind of issues customers may encounter, how might resolve those issues. Additionally, they assist consumers find clear pathways by highlighting fresh problems and finding potential for growth.

Low Wireframe

I developed a low fidelity wireframe after mapping out the customer journey. It includes the basic layout, navigation, and functionality, and will be used as a blueprint for design iterations and feedback. I plan to perform a heuristic evaluation, applying established heuristics and principles of good UX design, along with Susan's and business requirements, to assess usability and user-friendliness of the wireframe.

Heuristic Evaluation

After creating low-fidelity wireframes and prototypes, a comprehensive heuristic evaluation was conducted with 4 participants each lasting about 30 minutes, using Nielsen's 10 heuristics for user interface design.
Objective of the evaluation:

  • Observe how well users can accomplish the specified tasks. Is it possible for them to recover if they make a mistake?

  • Identify areas of the app that need to be improved to improve user satisfaction and performance.

The goal of my design work was to develop an engaging user-friendly interface that met both project objectives and addressed users issues and needs, taking into consideration Susan as persona of app users .
